Ponoko, a New Zealand company, developed a laser cutter that can follow patterns downloaded from the Internet, allowing would-be designers anywhere in the world to create complex shapes in wood and plastic. Artists and entrepreneurs use Ponoko's cutters to make small batches of toys, lampshades and other products.
